Fishing for ABC's

This fun preschool alphabet activity uses items found around the house and it an exciting way to teach preschoolers to recognize the ABC's. Preschoolers can learn about reusing materials as they save the lids from frozen juice containers while preparing to make this game.

What You Need

Wash and save the lids from frozen juice concentrate containers
Several magnetic fishing sets (These can be purchased from dollar stores)
A large bucket
A permanent marker

What to Do

Purchase several magnetic fishing sets online or at a local dollar store. Collect at 26 or 52 lids from frozen juice concentrate containers. Wash them well and using a permanent marker write one letter of the alphabet on each lid. Put the lids in the large bucket and give each preschooler a magnetic fishing pole. Have preschoolers take turns fishing for letters. When they catch a letter, have the preschooler tell you what the name of the letter is.

Variations

This game can be played several different ways. If you have enough juice lids, you can make a set of upper case and lower case letters. Have the preschoolers fish for the matching letters. This can also be played by making two sets of upper case letters and have preschoolers fish until they find the matching letters.

Preschoolers can use the juice lids labeled with upper case and lower case letters to play a memory concentration game. Spread the juice lids face down on the floor and have preschoolers take turns trying to find a match.
