Miss Shields' Top Ten Christmas Gifts for Preschool Teachers

In the movie, A Christmas Story, all the children gave Miss Shields a small gift, such as an apple, while Ralphie gave Miss Shields a very large fruit basket. Although all gifts are thoughtful, they could use a touch of creativity. If Miss Shields had the opportunity to make some Christmas gift ideas for teachers, she'd probably suggest the following:
  1. Gift Certificate – Gift certificates are an easy gift because you can be sure that your preschooler’s teacher is going to get something that they will enjoy. Many movie theaters offer gift certificate packages that would make a fun night out for your child’s preschool teacher. Book stores, restaurants, and local malls also offer gift certificates and provide a wide variety of items for your preschool teacher to choose from.
  1. Handwritten Card – Preschool teachers love to hear about the difference they are making in the lives of the preschoolers in their class. Too often we get so busy in our lives that we forget to tell people how much they mean to us. A simple card, either store bought or homemade, with a short note from you and your preschooler can light up a preschool teacher’s day.
  1. Homemade Treats – Bake something special with your preschooler and put it in a small jar or decorative bag to give to your child’s preschool teacher. Preschoolers will love the fact that they help to make their teacher’s gift and preschool teachers will enjoy some tasty treats.
  1. Preschool Books – Preschool teachers are always looking to add to their classroom library. Purchase one of your preschooler’s favorite books and write a short note in the front of the cover to donate to the preschool library.
  1. Homemade Coupons – Make your own coupons by cutting out pieces of cardstock and having your preschooler help decorate them. You can offer to volunteer to visit the classroom and read a story to the preschoolers or bring in a special snack. Be creative and consider the needs of your child's preschool.
  1. Arts and Craft Supplies – Preschool teachers are constantly going through arts and craft supplies and often the money comes out of their own pocket. Basic art supplies like paints, stamps, and glitter will always find a use in a preschool classroom.
  1. Thank You – A simple heart-felt "thank you" can make a preschool teacher's day. If you think you do not have the time or resources to provide a nice Christmas gift, do not underestimate the power of gratitude.
  1. Preschool Magazine Subscription – There are many wonderful preschool magazines available geared towards both preschool teachers and preschoolers. Zoobooks, Highlights, and National Geographic for Kids are wonderful magazines that preschoolers will enjoy in the classroom. The Mailbox and Teacher’s Helper can provide curriculum help for your child’s preschool teacher. Be sure that your child’s preschool teacher does not have an existing subscription to the magazine before you order it.
  1. Preschool CD’s – Music makes learning fun for preschoolers and their teachers. Adding a preschool music CD to your preschool teacher’s collection is a wonderful way to show your appreciation.
  1. Anything – As with all Christmas gifts, the thought is what counts. Do not stress about trying to find the "perfect" gift. Your child’s preschool teacher will be happy that you thought of them during the Holiday season and cared enough to show your appreciation for everything they do for your preschooler.
