Preschool Literacy Activity - Yarn Letters

Preschoolers love experimenting with different mediums. This preschool literacy activity requires very few supplies and really gets preschoolers excited about learning to write the letters of the alphabet.

What You Need

Several colors of yarn.
A glue bottle for each preschooler
Colored construction paper

What To Do

Parent or Teacher Preparation - Cut the yarn into a collection of different lengths. Make sure you have some longer lengths and some short lengths. If desired, you can print a sample of the letter you would like preschoolers to practice on the paper before giving it to the preschoolers. They can use this to model their own letters off of or use it to practice making their first glue letter.

Preschooler Participation - Show preschoolers how to use their glue bottle to write the alphabet letter that they are working on. When preschoolers have written the alphabet letter in glue help them to find pieces of yarn that fit to cover their glue letter. Preschoolers can experiment with writing their alphabet letters big or small, using different colors of yarn, and making multiple letters on their paper.

This preschool literacy activity works best with letters that have only straight edges but it can be used with others as well. This is an excellent introduction to writing for preschoolers because they do not see it as work and they are able to use the long and short pieces of yarn to visualize the way that they need to write each letter of the alphabet.

Variation - Use the same method to teach preschoolers to recognize and write their numbers. Preschoolers enjoy learning how to write the number of their own age or the numbers in their phone number.
